The science

The science beneath the everyday.

Understand the mechanism. Notice the limits. Keep asking better questions.

These notes explain general research. They are not measurements from a Mool Maati farm, property, or product.

01Soil biology

Soil is a living exchange.

+

HOW IT WORKS

As organic material is transformed, nutrients move between organisms and become available to plants. Soil life also affects the physical structure that roots inhabit.

Context matters

Biological activity alone does not establish soil fertility or prove additional carbon storage. Local conditions and measurements matter; soil organisms also participate in greenhouse-gas emissions.

02Water & soil

Rain needs a way in.

+

HOW IT WORKS

Stable soil aggregates create spaces through which water can enter and move. Roots, organic material, and soil organisms help shape this structure. Compaction and surface sealing can interrupt these pathways.

Context matters

Infiltration is not the same as water storage. Soil texture, depth, restrictive layers, and existing wetness also affect the movement of rainfall.

03Agroecology

Diversity works across time and space.

+

HOW IT WORKS

Rotations create diversity over time. Intercropping creates it within a field. Trees and crops add layers. Thoughtfully managed combinations can support functions such as pollination and nutrient cycling.

Context matters

Species may also compete for resources. The useful combination depends on the setting; diversity is not an automatic promise of higher yield.

04Climate & buildings

Comfort begins before the switch.

+

HOW IT WORKS

External shade reduces incoming solar heat. Building form and openings influence airflow. Materials with thermal mass can absorb and later release heat.

Context matters

A strategy suited to hot, dry conditions may perform differently in humid weather. Thermal mass needs an opportunity to release stored heat; natural ventilation depends on outdoor conditions.

05Grain diversity

Millet is a family of possibilities.

+

HOW IT WORKS

Millets are a diverse group of cereals. Some are suited to dryland conditions; their variety can broaden both farming choices and the everyday pantry.

Context matters

Suitability differs by species, variety, and place. Every millet is not equally drought-tolerant, and there is no universal water-saving percentage. Product and nutritional claims need specific verification.
